Climate Change Threatens US Military: Climate change presents a “strategically-significant” risk to US national security, a bipartisan coalition of senior military and security leaders have warned. An accompanying briefing book carries recommendations for the federal government such as assigning a cabinet-level official for climate change and security issues and prioritizing climate change in intelligence assessments. Super Typhoon Storms Taiwan: The year’s strongest typhoon slammed southern Taiwan with heavy winds and torrential rain, injuring five people and leaving half a million without power. Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau warned of further damage by Typhoon Meranti before it moves to China. Meranti surprised many by rapidly intensifying to a Category 5 storm in just 24 hours. Typhoon intensity in the Asia has increased markedlyover the last four decades, fueled by ocean warming. (News: Focus TaiwanReutersCNNHuffington PostAFPMashableUSA TodayBackground: Climate Signals)

Methane Emissions Rising from Fracking: Methane emissions from the fossil fuel industry are responsible for the majority of the recent rise in global atmospheric methane, according to a new study. This research adds to the growing body of evidencethat disputes the fossil fuel industry’s assertion that other sources of methane are causing the increase. Fugitive fossil fuel methane emissions have increased by approximately 24 million tons per year since the 1980s, with much of the growth occurring after the year 2000 – around when the shale gas boom began in the US. The report is relevant to the ongoing debate over whether and how to regulate fracking, a debate which will be center stage at a Thursday Hill hearing. (ClimateWire $)
