Olivia Perfetti: Why I support a Price on Carbon

Sometimes in the battle for climate justice, we lose sight of what we are actually fighting for. The daily work of building a movement for carbon pricing can feel like shouting into the wind. That’s why every once in a while, we have to remind ourselves of why we do what we do, and what’s at stake.

Today, I fought for the coral reefs. Coral reefs provide shelter and support for an amazing number of diverse species, including many species that we have yet to identify. Coral reefs also protect shorelines from erosion, safeguarding half-a-billion people who live within 100km of a coral reef. But like many valuable ecosystems today, coral reefs are in danger because of Climate Change. Algae, the main diet of coral, cannot thrive in warm temperatures, causing corals to “bleach” and starve. About one quarter of coral reefs worldwide have already been destroyed.

Like coral reefs, humans are responsible for the well-being of many other species on this planet. We are a powerful, intelligent species, capable of altering the course of earth’s climate. Let us learn from the coral reefs, and use our power to shelter, support, and protect our ecosystem, rather than destroy it. #PutAPriceOnIt
