According to @ecocycle_zerowaste, more than 500 million disposable plastic straws are used every day in the U.S. alone. The movement to ban single-use straws has taken off and gained a large viral presence. Recently, Seattle became one of the first major U.S. cities to ban single-use plastic straws and New York City hosted a rally in hopes of passing a similar law. Other cities and businesses are following suit and taking actions to limit straws or get rid of them entirely. @Starbucks just announced their plan to eliminate single-use plastic straws by 2020, removing more than one billion straws a year from landfills. The introduction of their cold-cup lids is one creative solution that shows single-use plastic straws are a thing of the past. It’s important to note that not all folks can eliminate plastic straws for medical purposes, but those who are not negatively impacted by their absence can make this simple change today that will have a big impact on tomorrow.
