In Germany, the energy company RWE wants to chop down a 12,000-year-old forest to mine for coal. That would be a double hit for the climate: Logging the trees would release their stored carbon into the atmosphere, and burning the coal mined beneath them would add even more emissions.
A court order has temporarily halted the deforestation in the Hambach forest, but RWE thinks its case will ultimately prevail and is preparing to move ahead. The good news is that public opinion could really have an impact on the outcome. RWE’s stock has already dropped following massive protests in Germany earlier this month.
