Sea level rise is accelerating. From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm as oceans expanded due to ocean warming and ice melt.
Globally, eight of the world’s 10 largest cities are near a coast, and about 40 percent of the world’s population live within 100 km of coastlines.
Higher sea levels mean deadly and destructive storm surges push farther inland than they once did, which means more frequent flooding and greater risks to coastal communities.
Sea level rise is especially problematic in the Florida Keys, where 90 percent of the land mass is five feet above sea level or less.
