In a historic move, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the country will no longer issue new permits for oil and gas exploration offshore–an enormous shift from the previous administration. It came on the back of a Greenpeace petition that gathered over 50,000 signatures. Ardern ran her campaign on the platform of making New Zealand “zero carbon” by 2050 and it looks like she’s living up to her word.
New Zealand is planting 100 million trees a year, and has a goal of hitting a billion trees in 10 years. Ardern also wants the country to run on 100% renewable energy by 2035. She’s creating a program to let climate refugees live and work in New Zealand. New Zealand takes climate change seriously, does your country?
