In 2017, the Heartland Institute mailed 350,000 copies of a climate change denying textbook to public school science teachers with the goal to reach every K-12 science teacher in America. Never heard of The Heartland Institute? It’s is a conservative think tank that denies the scientific evidence for human-caused climate change. Funded by the fossil fuel industry and billionaires, including the Koch brothers, the title of the textbook is “Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming,” despite 97% of climate scientists concur with human-caused climate change. The group’s spokesman, Jim Lakely, said the institute mailed these books out of concern that “the upcoming generation learn the truth.”
The Heartland Institute isn’t the first to run such a scheme. Since the 1950s, fossil fuel companies like the American Petroleum Institute have targeted U.S. classrooms. In Oklahoma alone, 14,000 educators teach math and science using curricula developed by the oil industry. Nationwide, 75% of public middle and high school science teachers are teaching climate change, but only half of those instructors are explaining humans’ role in driving it. Comment if you think America’s children deserve to learn the truth about climate change.
