A new report by the California Coastal Commission warns of a possible sea level rise of over 10 feet by 2100, sinking large portions of coastal beach towns. The report calculates projected effects of climate change using estimates of warming air temperature and their impact on glaciers. This 10-foot rise, however, is the extreme scenario. The lower end of projections show a sea level rise of 3.4 feet by 2100. But even if projections stay toward the lower end of the spectrum, the state Coastal Commission warns ⅔ of Southern California beaches may be affected by the turn of the century. The Commission suggests municipalities to evaluate the most extreme possibilities and into consideration the potential effects in the approval process for large buildings. Though, the Port of San Diego replied to the commission that, “planning for such event without a greater degree of certainty is not appropriate.” Do you think municipalities should prepare for the worst case scenario to avoid catastrophe even without certitude?
