Producing meat has a pretty heavy environmental impact, when you factor in the land, energy and water needed to raise animals and process them into the foods you find at the grocery store. According to a recent study, 80 percent of greenhouse gas pollution from agriculture is associated with producing meat. Beef has the highest impact of all. The amount of water it takes to produce a quarter pound burger is equivalent to a month’s worth of daily showers!
We know that going vegetarian isn’t for everyone, but you can still make a big difference by cutting back how much meat you eat. That’s the idea behind Meatless Monday, an international campaign to promote a more sustainable diet. If you avoid meat even just one day per week you can cut your contribution to climate change.
