Coal country is facing a crisis. At the same time that several major coal companies have gone bankrupt, many fewer people are employed by coal today than just a few decades ago.
These two things mean the funds that were supposed to pay for retired coal miners’ pensions and healthcare are drying up. In the past, the federal government stepped in to prevent these retired workers from losing their benefits. But now, that help is set to expire in April unless Congress acts fast.
The Miners Protection Act of 2017 could be a long-term fix for this problem. Today, we’re asking you to let your representatives in Congress know you support this bill. As we fight for a transition to a clean energy economy, it’s also important we don’t leave the workers who once kept the lights on behind.
